Flávio Bolsonaro finishes ahead of Lula in Brazil's first round; runoff on 25 October
Flávio Bolsonaro finished first and Lula second in Brazil's presidential vote on 4 October; neither passed 50%, so they meet in a runoff on 25 October (Le Monde, France 24, El País, Hindustan Times, Il Sole 24 Ore). Lula called the result "unexpected" and said he would win in "extra time". CNN Brasil reported that Lula lost votes in 25 states compared with the 2022 first round. Il Sole 24 Ore said Brazilian shares rose and the dollar fell.
Brazil is the largest economy in South America and a major supplier of coffee, sugar and soya, so its politics move world markets.
For Kenya the effect is indirect, through commodity prices and the dollar.
Supporters see a rejection of the government's record on prices and crime.
Critics say the Bolsonaro family's politics threaten institutions, and Lula's camp expects to regain ground.
The runoff is three weeks away. DailyDrop will report polls and market reaction; it has not published vote percentages because the sources it saw did not agree.
