Kenya confirms its first Ebola case: a man back from Congo dies at Nairobi Hospital

Kenya confirmed its first Ebola case on 6 October (BBC, Al Jazeera, The New York Times, The Standard, Citizen Digital, ABC News). The patient, a Kenyan who had lived in the Democratic Republic of Congo for about seven years, fell ill roughly a month before returning, travelled by road to Kampala and took Jambojet to Nairobi on Saturday 3 October. Relatives and friends took him to Nairobi Hospital, where he was isolated and later died. Samples tested positive for the Bundibugyo virus. Duale said 28 contacts, including family and health workers, were identified and 23 passengers from the flight were being traced; contacts are to be monitored for 21 days. AP notes there is no approved vaccine or treatment for Bundibugyo.

It is the first Ebola case in Kenya, in a country with a major international airport, and the strain has no approved vaccine. A death on arrival shows screening can be missed.

The risk to the general public is low if contacts are traced and isolated. Follow Ministry of Health guidance, report fever after contact with a sick traveller, and avoid sharing unverified messages.

Officials say the case was imported, contacts are being traced and there is no outbreak in Kenya.

Critics will ask how a very ill traveller passed through the airport and whether screening of arrivals from Congo and Uganda is strong enough.

Watch the contact list over the next 21 days. One more confirmed case would change the picture; none so far has been confirmed.
