Trump announces a Russia–Ukraine "energy ceasefire"; Zelenskyy says it is news to him and Russia hits power plants
President Trump said on Sunday 11 October that Russia and Ukraine had agreed an energy ceasefire effective immediately (Reuters, USA Today, CNA). NBC News reported Zelenskyy as saying it was "news for me", and Reuters that Ukraine was waiting for details of the proposals. Zelenskyy said Ukraine was ready to agree and would stop strikes on Russian refineries if Russia stopped attacking Ukraine's energy sites (Reuters, Ukrainska Pravda). ABC News, the Inquirer and Punch reported that Russia struck Ukrainian power plants after the announcement, and Ukrainska Pravda that an energy facility in Kharkiv had just been hit.
Fuel and power are now the main targets of the war. A real pause could ease diesel and gas prices; a ceasefire that exists only on paper would not.
Kenya imports refined fuel, so lower global diesel prices would eventually reach EPRA's monthly review. Nothing changes yet: the ceasefire is unconfirmed by either capital.
Washington says the pause will reduce attacks on energy sites and open the way to wider talks.
Kyiv says it has not seen the terms, and critics note that strikes continued within hours.
One side announced it; neither warring government has confirmed terms. Judge it by whether strikes on energy sites stop on Monday.
