Kenya confirms a second Ebola case in a relative of the first patient, found in quarantine, and says there is no evidence of wider spread

Kenya's Ministry of Health confirmed the country's second Ebola case on Wednesday 14 October (Reuters, BBC, Al Jazeera, CBC). The patient is a relative of the first case, the man who died in Nairobi last week after arriving from DR Congo (BBC, The Telegraph, CBC), and he tested positive while in quarantine (CBC). Al Jazeera and Premium Times say he is 39 years old, and Premium Times adds that he developed symptoms during quarantine. France 24 noted that this patient had not travelled, so this is not a case that arrived from abroad. The ministry said there is no evidence of wider spread (CNA, Channels Television, France 24). CNA reported that he is being treated in isolation and that officials have identified 128 contacts of the first case and traced 113 of them. In DR Congo, confirmed cases have passed 9,000 and more than 4,000 people have died (Al Jazeera, CTV News, Die Zeit, RFI, FAZ).

A second case in a relative shows that the virus can pass from person to person on Kenyan soil, even if the first patient came from abroad. It also tests the quarantine and contact-tracing system that the first case set in motion. Fear of a regional outbreak is real because the epidemic in DR Congo is the deadliest in that country's history (RFI).

Ebola spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected people (SABC), so health workers and families caring for the sick are the most exposed; ordinary daily contact is not the main route. Follow the Ministry of Health for updates, treat forwarded messages and voice notes with caution, and seek medical advice early if you develop a fever after contact with a sick person.

Kenyan officials say there is no evidence of wider spread, and the fact that the patient was already in quarantine when he fell ill suggests the monitoring worked (CNA, Channels Television, Premium Times).

Al Jazeera says the infection raises concern about cross-border spread, and reports from DR Congo say containment efforts there are faltering even as Africa CDC sees hotspots shifting (Al Jazeera, CTV News, Xinhua).

Count the untraced contacts, not the headlines. With 15 of 128 contacts still to be reached on CNA's figures, the next few days of tracing decide whether this stays at two cases. DailyDrop has not seen the virus strain named or the second patient's condition described in the reports it checked.
