Dewan Rakyat reopens today, with Budget 2027 due on Friday

The Dewan Rakyat resumes on Monday 5 October. Prime Minister and Finance Minister Anwar Ibrahim is due to table Budget 2027 on Friday 9 October, the fifth Madani budget (Malay Mail, The Vibes). The Vibes expects it to dominate the meeting. The Tabung Haji Royal Commission of Inquiry report was tipped as a likely topic. The Election Commission is also due to set Melaka election dates on Wednesday.

The Budget sets taxes, subsidies and development spending for next year. It is also the government’s clearest statement of priorities as state elections approach.

Expect talk of subsidies, cash aid and taxes before Friday. Treat leaked “Budget” lists on messaging apps as unverified until the speech.

The government says the Budget will support growth and protect the rakyat while consolidating the deficit.

Opposition MPs usually argue that targeted subsidies and tax measures do not go far enough on the cost of living.

The real test is Friday’s numbers: the deficit target, any new tax and the size of cash aid. DailyDrop will report them in Saturday’s edition once the speech is out.
