Verstappen won the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia at Sepang on 4 October (Bernama, BusinessDay/Reuters, Qatar Tribune, Khaleej Times, Click2Houston). The start was delayed by more than 90 minutes by heavy rain, then paused again over software problems on the formation lap. The race began behind the safety car, and a second safety car followed. Antonelli was second and Hamilton third from 18th on the grid, and Russell retired five laps from the end with a suspected power unit failure. The race replaced the Bahrain round, which was moved because of conflict in the Middle East.
It was Sepang’s first Grand Prix since 2017 and a rare one-off, so it shows how the Middle East conflict is reshaping the sporting calendar as well as energy prices.
Few Malaysians expected Formula 1 at Sepang this year. If you went, the weather and delays will have been long. Whether the race returns is not decided.
Hosting the race showcases Malaysia’s motorsport facilities and brings visitors and spending.
A one-off, short-notice race carries costs and gives no promise of a permanent return.
Watch whether Malaysia’s government or Sepang International Circuit say anything about a future return. DailyDrop has not seen any commitment.

Verstappen wins a rain-hit Bahrain Grand Prix at Sepang, Malaysia’s first Formula 1 race since 2017
The start was delayed by more than 90 minutes, there were two safety-car periods and George Russell retired late. Kimi Antonelli finished second.
Max Verstappen won the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia at the Sepang International Circuit on Sunday 4 October, his first win of the season, according to Bernama, BusinessDay (Reuters), Qatar Tribune, Khaleej Times and Click2Houston. He had also taken pole position on Saturday. The race was moved to Malaysia because of the conflict in the Middle East, and it brought Formula 1 back to Sepang for the first time since 2017.
Heavy rain delayed the start by more than 90 minutes, and a second delay followed when cars had software problems on the formation lap. The field ran two laps behind the safety car before a standing start. Verstappen lost places after a poor restart and regained them after a second safety car. Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes was second and Lewis Hamilton third for Ferrari, despite a tyre gamble that left him 18th at the start. George Russell was running third when a suspected power unit problem ended his race five laps from the end, which left Antonelli 84 points clear in the championship, according to the same reports.
