KLCI edges up 0.03% to 1,630.87 before a weak US jobs report; ringgit holds near RM4.08

The FBM KLCI closed at 1,630.87 on Friday, up 0.51 of a point or 0.03% (Bernama, NST). Gainers beat losers 585 to 541. The ringgit closed slightly firmer at about 4.08 per dollar (Bernama, The Star, Business Today); Bank Negara’s 5pm table was 4.081/4.085. After Bursa closed, US payrolls rose 29,000 against about 90,000 expected and unemployment rose to 4.2% (The Star, Malay Mail, Bernama, Il Sole 24 Ore). The S&P 500 rose 0.73% to 7,722.72.

Weak US jobs data lowers expectations of another Federal Reserve rate rise, which usually helps the ringgit and Asian stocks.

A firmer ringgit helps if you pay for imports, overseas study or travel in dollars.

Softer US data supports emerging-market currencies.

It also raises doubts about US growth and global demand, which matters for an export economy.

The reaction on Bursa and in the ringgit opens today. DailyDrop will report it tomorrow.
