Melaka is heading to a state election, and the Election Commission is due to fix the dates this week

Melaka’s 28-seat assembly was dissolved on 23 September (The Star, The Vibes, Malay Mail). Chief Minister Ab Rauf Yusoh announced it a day earlier. The Election Commission is due to meet in a special session this week to set dates. One outlet reported that Pakatan Harapan was considering contesting all 28 seats; this is not confirmed.

Melaka is the first state vote since the last round and will be read as a test for the unity government and for Perikatan Nasional.

If you live in Melaka, check your voter registration with the Election Commission, which will announce key dates on Wednesday.

Supporters of an early poll say a fresh mandate settles political uncertainty.

Critics say an election costs money and can distract from governing during a Budget season.

Hold the date: the nomination and polling days will be known by midweek. Until then, seat deals are talk.
