US stocks head for records on earnings optimism as oil slips under US$100

US stocks moved towards records on Tuesday as earnings optimism grew (global markets report, Canadian Press). The S&P 500 closed at 7,818.93, up 0.58%. Brent fell 0.79% to US$99.42 in midday reports and WTI settled at US$89.44. A G7 plan to release 100 million barrels from emergency reserves was cited in one report.

Wall Street’s mood and oil prices set the tone for Asian trading the next morning.

Cheaper oil would help fuel and transport costs over time.

Investors see strong earnings as a reason for the rally.

Skeptics see a rally built on hopes of rate cuts while yields stay high.

The G7 reserve release is single-source. Watch for confirmation.
