The number of unhealthy areas nearly doubled overnight to 21 at 8am on Tuesday, with Johor the worst hit (Malay Mail); Business Today counted 28 at 3pm. Nilai read 161 then 170 and Seremban 157 then 168. In Selangor, Johan Setia read 157, Shah Alam 155, Banting 154 and Petaling Jaya 153. Penang’s Minden was still good at 45 in the morning. The Star’s roundup said Jakarta was struggling to contain fires in Borneo and Sumatra.
Haze affects health and can shut schools and delay flights. The trend, from fewer areas to many, is the story.
Check the API for your area each morning. Avoid strenuous outdoor exercise when it is above 100, wear a well-fitted N95 mask outside, and keep windows closed.
The smoke comes from fires across the Strait, so local authorities have limited tools beyond warnings and health advice.
Critics say the same fires return every dry season and call for stronger pressure on Jakarta and on the companies behind them.
The count of unhealthy areas is the number to watch. DailyDrop saw no school closure announcement on Tuesday.
