Nine days after an Air Force plane crashed at Igbokoda, victims' remains are still unrecovered as the air chief orders tighter safety checks

A Nigerian Air Force ATR 42-500, NAF 931, crashed at Igbokoda, Ilaje Local Government Area, Ondo State, on October 5, 2026 (Leadership, citing an Air Force statement). Punch reported on Wednesday that the 25 victims' bodies were still unrecovered nine days later, with fears of a public health crisis. Leadership quoted residents and the monarch asking for the remains to be removed because of a foul odour, and medical experts warning that fumigation alone may not stop disease. The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, ordered stronger flight-safety oversight (Leadership, Punch). Channels TV said a 12-member board was set up to investigate. Punch said more components were recovered.

Families cannot bury their dead, and a town beside the site faces health risk. The investigation will decide whether the crash points to wider problems in military aviation.

Residents of Ilaje should follow the health authorities' guidance on water and hygiene. Others can expect the board's findings to inform debate on the Air Force's fleet.

The Air Force says it has set up a board and tightened oversight.

Critics point to the delay in recovering remains and to the Senate's call to audit ageing aircraft.

Two dates matter: when the remains are recovered and when the board reports. Until then the cause is unknown, and DailyDrop will not guess.
