Tinubu opens his campaign council and says he will skip some rallies; Atiku calls the crowded list "a confession of fear"

The "rainbow" roster put Wike, Adeleke and Soludo to work for the APC. The opposition says it shows fear, and Vice-President Shettima hit back at Atiku and Obi.

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday inaugurated the All Progressives Congress campaign council for his 2027 re-election bid at a ceremony in Abuja, according to Channels TV, Premium Times, Leadership and Punch. Channels reported that he told members governance would remain his priority, and that colleagues had cautioned him against letting campaigning pull him away from his duties. Leadership quoted him saying Nigeria needs fixing now and that he will not attend every rally; Vanguard and Daily Trust carried the same message in their headlines. Channels also said he urged members to deliver polling units. Vanguard put the presidential election on January 16, 2027.

The roster is what drew attention. Vanguard said the Presidency and the party put leading opposition figures and governors on the council despite push-back from sections of the APC. Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory minister and a chieftain of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, was named coordinator for the FCT and Rivers State, Channels TV reported, and ThisDay said Governors Ademola Adeleke of Osun and Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra were named managers for their states. At the ceremony Wike told APC governors to deliver their states and not to claim victory if they failed, Channels and Daily Trust said. Premium Times reported that Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Opeyemi Bamidele backed Wike's Rainbow Coalition, and BusinessDay said the Senate declared on Tuesday that the coalition is on course for Mr Tinubu's victory. Akpabio also told governors to finish their terms before eyeing other offices, Channels TV and Daily Trust reported. Premium Times added that the council wants the party to use its hold on federal, state and local governments to reach wards and polling units.

The opposition answered within hours. Atiku Abubakar, the former vice-president, called the revised list "a crowded confession of Tinubu's fear", according to ThisDay and Vanguard. Vanguard said he accused the president of putting political alliances ahead of hardship and insecurity, and Premium Times said he questioned the use of the Presidential Villa for the inauguration. The African Democratic Congress accused the APC of coercing opposition governors into the council, Vanguard reported. Punch said Governor Seyi Makinde's campaign called the team a "coalition of failed politicians". Vice-President Kashim Shettima told Atiku "you're not Abraham Lincoln", Vanguard reported, and called Peter Obi a "master of bogus statistics", Punch and Daily Trust said. TheCable and Peoples Gazette reported that Mr Tinubu referred to himself as governor in his speech; DailyDrop has seen no recording and no Presidency comment.

What to watch: whether APC governors accept Wike's role in their states, how the PDP, APGA and Accord react to members who took council posts, and whether opposition leaders agree on one candidate, a question Punch said coalition talks are still working on. The claim that Mr Tinubu's rally plans show ill health is in our unverified box.

Tinubu asks lawmakers to approve a N100.5bn refund to Yobe for its airport and sends bills on drug law and accident probes

President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday asked the National Assembly to approve a N100.5bn promissory note to repay Yobe State for building the Damaturu cargo airport, according to Punch and ThisDay. ThisDay said both chambers have begun considering the request and that Senate President Godswill Akpabio gave a Senate committee one month to report. Punch said the president sent three bills. It named two: one to overhaul the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and one to widen the powers of the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau. The Sun's headline said he seeks repeal of the Indian Hemp Act, and ThisDay described the bills as reforms of drug-enforcement and safety-investigation laws.

Punch later reported that aviation experts criticised the refund plan, citing doubts about the airport's economic viability. DailyDrop has not seen the Yobe government's reply, the airport's traffic figures or the text of the third bill. A promissory note is a promise to pay later, so it adds to what the Federal Government owes. The committee review is the stage to watch.

Dangote promises priority allocation to small investors in his refinery share offer as the SEC warns the public over promotions

Aliko Dangote on Wednesday promised priority allocation to investors who apply for N50,000 or less in the initial public offering of his refinery, Punch and Leadership reported, saying the aim is to widen participation. At the N525 price given in earlier reports, N50,000 buys about 95 shares, which is DailyDrop's own sum; the minimum application then was 10 shares, or N5,250. Earlier reports said the offer closes on October 27, and DailyDrop has not seen a revised allotment date or a final subscription total. Leadership separately reported that Yobe Governor Mai Mala Buni approved N230.62 million to buy shares for 43,928 vulnerable women in the state's 17 local government areas, which works out at N5,250 each. That is one outlet.

The Securities and Exchange Commission had warned the investing public about the share sale, and Wayve Microfinance Bank Limited, named WayvePay in ThisDay's headline, said it had withdrawn the promotional material concerned, ThisDay reported. DailyDrop has not seen the SEC notice, so what exactly was wrong with the promotion is not confirmed, and ThisDay is the only outlet seen on the withdrawal. Anyone thinking of applying should start from the prospectus and a licensed broker or bank, not from an advertisement.

Nine days after an Air Force plane crashed at Igbokoda, victims' remains are still unrecovered as the air chief orders tighter safety checks

Nine days after a Nigerian Air Force aircraft crashed at Igbokoda, in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, the bodies of the 25 victims remain unrecovered, Punch reported, and fears of a public health crisis are rising. Leadership quoted residents and the community's monarch asking for the urgent removal of the remains, citing a foul odour across the town, and said medical experts warned that fumigation alone may not prevent an outbreak of disease. The aircraft was an ATR 42-500, tail number NAF 931, which crashed on October 5, 2026, according to a Nigerian Air Force statement carried by Leadership.

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, has ordered stronger flight-safety oversight across the service, Leadership and Punch reported, and Channels TV said the Air Force has set up a 12-member board to investigate the crash. Punch added that more aircraft components have been recovered. Premium Times separately reported that the Senate wants the presidential and military aircraft audited and the Federal Government to replace ageing fleets. DailyDrop has not seen the cause of the crash or a date by which the remains will be recovered.

US inflation rises to 3.7 percent as the Iran war lifts fuel prices; the dollar touches an 18-month high and Wall Street falls

Consumer prices in the United States rose 0.6 percent in September, taking the annual inflation rate to 3.7 percent from 3.4 percent in August, according to CNBC, CBS News and The Hill; The Hill attributed the figures to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. CNBC and FinancialJuice said economists had expected 3.6 percent. The BBC and the Financial Times tied the rise to higher fuel costs as the war involving Iran pushes up energy prices, and the Guardian called it the last inflation report before the midterm elections. Bloomberg said the dollar rose to its highest since May 2025; Reuters reported on Thursday that it had pulled back from an 18-month high as Federal Reserve officials tempered bets on rate hikes. Reuters quoted Fed official Daly saying more hikes are likely but not urgently, and Bowman saying there is time to wait and see. Goolsbee called the report "discouraging", FinancialJuice said.

Wall Street fell. Bloomberg said the S&P 500 ended its longest calm streak since 2020 as AI-linked shares sank, and the Financial Times said chip stocks slid on inflation and worries about debt used to fund AI spending. DailyDrop did not find Wednesday's index closing levels confirmed by two outlets, so it does not print them. Oil stayed tense. Reuters reported that a container ship sank near the Strait of Hormuz after being hit by a projectile, Bloomberg, citing Singapore's maritime authority, said a cargo ship sank after a strike set it on fire, and the Guardian described the sharpest rise in Iranian attacks on shipping since the war began. FinancialJuice put Brent at $106.06 at Wednesday's settlement, a figure from one outlet, while Reuters said prices fell early on Thursday. For Nigeria, higher US interest rates and a firmer dollar can pull money out of emerging markets and make imports and dollar debts dearer, and dear oil raises export earnings and the cost of imported petrol together.

Unverified — what we cannot confirm

"Mr Tinubu's plan to skip some rallies shows he is unwell." Kenneth Okonkwo said so (Daily Trust, one outlet). The president's stated reason is that governance needs his attention (Leadership, Premium Times, Channels TV). DailyDrop has seen no medical statement either way.
"Parts of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway have been abandoned to route it elsewhere." The Presidency dismissed the suggestion, ThisDay reported, while Makinde's campaign demanded an audit of the N15trn project (ThisDay). One outlet seen on each point.
