Dangote promises priority allocation to small investors in his refinery share offer as the SEC warns the public over promotions
Aliko Dangote on Wednesday promised priority allocation to investors applying with N50,000 or less in the refinery's initial public offering, to widen participation (Punch, Leadership). At the N525 price reported earlier, N50,000 buys about 95 shares, DailyDrop's own calculation. Leadership reported that Yobe Governor Mai Mala Buni approved N230.62 million to buy shares for 43,928 women, which works out at N5,250 each. ThisDay reported that Wayve Microfinance Bank withdrew promotional material after a warning from the Securities and Exchange Commission. DailyDrop has not seen the SEC notice, a revised allotment date or a subscription total.
A priority for small applicants tilts a limited number of shares toward ordinary savers, while a regulator's warning shows the offer is attracting promoters who may not be authorised.
Apply only through a licensed broker or bank, read the prospectus, and ignore promotions that are not tied to the prospectus.
Supporters say priority for small investors makes a big company genuinely public.
Sceptics say priority rules mean little until the final allotment is published, and the SEC warning shows the risks of the rush.
Watch the allotment rules and the SEC's own notice. A pledge made on a stage is not an allocation.
