Pope Leo XIV is walking and eating after lung cancer surgery, doctors say
The Vatican said Pope Leo XIV, 71, was diagnosed with lung cancer after surgeons removed part of his right lung at a hospital in Rome on Tuesday (Leadership, ThisDay, BBC, Reuters). Leadership and BusinessDay named the type as lung adenocarcinoma. On Wednesday his doctors said recovery was progressing as planned: he was out of bed, walking and eating (Guardian, Vanguard, BBC, Channels TV). Channels TV said he is awaiting biopsy results to show whether the cancer has spread. Vanguard and Punch reported that his brother is being treated for blood cancer, a report DailyDrop has seen only in those two. King Charles wrote to him (Vanguard).
He leads the world's 1.4 billion Catholics, among them many millions in Africa, and his health affects the Church's calendar and decisions.
Catholic readers will follow the Vatican's own updates. Treat unofficial claims about his prognosis with caution until the biopsy result is published.
The biopsy result is the fact that matters. Until the Vatican publishes it, everything about prognosis is speculation.
