Meta removes 3.7 million accounts in a West African scam crackdown
Meta removed more than 3.7 million accounts, Pages and Groups from Facebook and Instagram after an international operation against online fraud networks in West Africa (Vanguard, BusinessDay). Vanguard said law enforcement agencies from 10 countries took part and that Nigeria and Ghana came under the spotlight. DailyDrop has not seen a breakdown by country or a count of arrests.
Online fraud networks in the region harm victims abroad and damage the reputation of honest Nigerians online.
Be wary of messages that ask for money or gift cards, and report suspicious profiles on the platform.
A large takedown is a start, but accounts can be rebuilt. Watch for prosecutions, not only deletions.
