Prime Minister Rob Jetten and his partner Nicolás Keenan expect a child via a surrogate in 2027

NOS, NU.nl, AD, NRC, De Telegraaf, de Volkskrant and the Nederlands Dagblad report that the couple shared the news on Instagram on Monday and that the surrogate and the egg donor are people they know.

Prime Minister Rob Jetten (39) and his partner Nicolás Keenan (29) expect a child via a surrogate in 2027, report NOS, NU.nl, AD and NRC on Monday, October 19. The couple announced the news on Instagram with the words: 'A very special someone is on the way. See you in 2027, little one', NOS quotes. NU.nl reports that the pair shared an ultrasound photo, and according to AD the two are 'eternally grateful' to their egg donor and surrogate. De Telegraaf writes that in the social media announcement the couple speak of 'a little one'. NRC writes that the surrogate is a Dutch woman named Lisa who is known to the prime minister and Keenan; according to NRC, D66 stresses that this is explicitly not commercial surrogacy. The egg donor is also someone they know. De Volkskrant writes that Jetten is not only the youngest prime minister ever but also the first in office to expect a child. NOS's Nieuwsuur gave the news attention in its broadcast of October 19.

NU.nl's headline says that Jetten expects the child via a surrogate and also wants to change the law on this. The Nederlands Dagblad writes that the news comes at a politically tense moment, because the House of Representatives is considering a D66 proposal to make surrogacy easier and the SGP's support for the cabinet depends on it. According to D66, the entire procedure took place in the Netherlands and meets all Dutch legal requirements, and no payment was made to the surrogate or the egg donor. In a separate article, AD explains exactly how the surrogacy arrangement of the couple works. According to Vandaag Inside, Jetten responded with the words 'Immensely grateful', and Valentijn Driessen said in the same program: 'Fine, in 9 months the cabinet will be gone anyway'. NOS notes that Jetten and Keenan announced the news together via Instagram, and the Nederlands Dagblad places the announcement in a period in which the House of Representatives is still handling the proposal. A precise due date is not mentioned in the reports.

World Food Programme cuts food aid for half a million Gazans for lack of funds

The World Food Programme (WFP) is cutting monthly food aid for about 500,000 people in the Gaza Strip for lack of funds, report NOS, NU.nl, AD and BNR on Monday, October 19. TPO reports that the number of recipients falls from 1.6 to 1.1 million, about half the population. According to TPO, traditional donors, including the United States and European countries, have reduced their contributions, said acting WFP director Carl Skau. NOS writes that the US was the biggest funder but that support under President Trump has dropped sharply.

BNR and TPO report that over the next six months, through March 2027, the WFP needs 450 million dollars for Gaza and the West Bank. On the West Bank the number of recipients halves from 400,000 to 200,000, writes TPO. Regional transport strikes again on Thursday, October 22 as collective labor agreement talks have stalled

Bus drivers and train staff in regional transport are laying down their work again on Thursday, October 22, report the unions FNV and CNV, according to AD, NOS, NU.nl and De Telegraaf. It is the second nationwide strike day since the collective labor agreement (cao) talks stalled in the summer. AD writes that a large part of the services of EBS, Qbuzz and RET is expected to come to a standstill. BNR reports that the public transport collective labor agreement covers about 13,000 employees, mainly bus drivers, and that the current agreement expired at the end of June.

According to BNR, about 90 percent of the buses that normally run stayed idle during the first strike on October 14, as FNV reports. The unions believe a 'package of deteriorations' is on the table and, according to AD, are sticking to strikes until Christmas. The employers regret the actions and say there is too little financial room, reports BNR. Actions are announced at least 48 hours in advance.
