National promises $1.75b for the first stage of Auckland's Mill Road, with construction from late 2028

National said on 4 October that it would commit $1.75 billion in Budget 2028 for stage one of Mill Road, Manukau to Alfriston, with construction from late 2028 (1News, RNZ, Newstalk ZB). A further $100 million would protect the route of stages two and three. The full road would be four lanes and 21.5 km. NZTA figures cited give a benefit-cost ratio of 3.10 untolled or 2.20 tolled. Tolling is unresolved.

South Auckland is growing fast and State Highway 1 is congested. The announcement is a big-ticket election promise.

If you drive between Manukau and Drury, nothing changes before 2028 even if National is re-elected.

Supporters say the south has waited too long.

Critics note the cost has risen over the years and public transport may deliver more for the money.

A promise for 2028 money is cheap now. The cost estimate and the toll decision are the details to watch.
