Greens set out a $4b passenger rail plan with overnight trains
The Greens announced a roughly $4 billion passenger rail package on Saturday 3 October (1News, SunLive). It includes an overnight Auckland-Wellington service on new sleeper trains, the return of the Southerner between Christchurch and Dunedin, and an extension of the Te Huia service to Tauranga, put at about $3.5 billion over two stages.
It would be the biggest expansion of intercity passenger rail in decades.
It would matter if you travel between cities without a car, but not before 2027 at the earliest.
Supporters say it cuts emissions and road traffic.
Critics say passenger numbers on existing services are small for the cost.
The Tauranga extension is most of the bill. Watch whether the Greens treat it as a coalition demand.
