Te Pāti Māori names a party list of one for the election
Te Pāti Māori announced on Sunday 4 October a party list of one for the election: general secretary Lance Norman, chosen unanimously (1News). Co-leader Rawiri Waititi said the party put collective Māori representation ahead of a long list. It wants voters to give it the candidate vote in the seven Māori electorates and the party vote to the Greens or Labour, which could produce an overhang. Labour's Willie Jackson criticised that approach in August (Te Ao News).
An overhang means extra seats, which can change the size of a coalition majority.
You get two votes: an electorate (candidate) vote and a party vote, and they can go to different parties.
The party says it keeps the focus on winning the Māori seats.
Critics say it risks wasting party votes and fuelling backlash against the Māori seats.
