How National's drug testing would work: a first failed test is recorded, a second triggers assessment

Under National's plan the Ministry of Social Development would record a first failed random test. A second would trigger a clinical alcohol and drug assessment, and normal sanctions could apply to anyone who then failed to meet obligations (1News, ODT). Testing would start at 10,000 a year and cost about $1.5 million a year from existing budgets.

The detail shows the policy is a staged process rather than an automatic benefit cut.

Relevant only if National leads the next government and you receive Jobseeker Support.

The sanctions path is the existing regime, which is where critics focus.
