Oil climbs as record tanker attacks cut shipping through Hormuz

Oil climbed in early trade on Thursday 8 October as attacks on tankers cut shipping through Hormuz to a two-month low (CNN, CNBC, DTN). Nine tankers were reported attacked in the past week, and Brent traded above US$100. Houthi militants fired ballistic missiles at Riyadh (CNBC).

The strait carries a fifth of the world's oil, and New Zealand imports all its refined fuel.

Expect upward pressure on pump prices over coming weeks if Brent stays above US$100.

Iran and its allies say the closure and attacks are leverage.

The US and Gulf states say they threaten shipping and civilians.

The price depends on single events. Watch the next tanker count and today's US close.
