Construction begins on the Waikare Gorge bridge, billed as the country's highest road bridge

Work began on 8 October on the Waikare Gorge bridge on SH2 between Napier and Wairoa, billed as the country's highest road bridge at about 65 metres above the river (1News, ODT). It replaces a temporary Bailey bridge in place since Cyclone Gabrielle in 2023. Reports describe about 260 metres and a truss design; NZTA earlier described an arch of just over 160 metres.

SH2 is a key link for Hawke's Bay and Wairoa.

Expect road works for about four years.

Check NZTA for the final design.
