NZ First promises to ban the public sale of fireworks if it joins the next government
NZ First said it would ban the public sale and private use of fireworks, with legislation ready within the first 100 days of the next government (ODT, RNZ). ACT's David Seymour opposes a ban. The coalition government rejected a parliamentary committee's recommendation for a ban in July.
Fireworks cause fires and frighten animals, but are a long-standing tradition.
It would affect Guy Fawkes and New Year displays.
Supporters cite animal welfare and fire risk.
Opponents cite tradition and the Kiwi childhood.
A ban needs a coalition partner. Watch National's response.
