Navi Pillay wins the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for work on accountability for war crimes
The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to Navi Pillay on 9 October (Khaleej Times, PBS, Nobel Prize website). Chair Jørgen Watne Frydnes said she was honoured for efforts to promote peace and international law, including work on accountability for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. Pillay is 85 and was born in Durban under apartheid. She led a United Nations inquiry into Gaza whose findings Israel rejected. The prize is presented on 10 December in Oslo.
The prize signals international support for legal accountability at a time when the International Criminal Court faces US sanctions.
It is a reminder that New Zealand has long backed international law, though no New Zealand reaction was seen by DailyDrop.
Supporters say the choice defends international law.
Critics, including the Schoen law firm statement Trump reshared, call her hostile to the US and Israel.
The choice is political by nature. The test is whether the Gaza inquiry findings, which Israel rejected, change any government's policy.
