US jet disables a cargo ship trying to run the Iran blockade in the Gulf of Oman
US Central Command said a fighter jet hit the stern of the Panama-flagged cargo ship Ocean Molica on 10 October, disabling its propulsion, after the crew ignored warnings while leaving an Iranian port (Reuters, Al Jazeera, Asharq Al-Awsat, The Straits Times, JNS). Iran's Revolutionary Guards claimed an oil tanker exploded after hitting a naval mine in the Strait of Hormuz, and UKMTO reported an outbound tanker hit by an unidentified projectile, with the crew safe (FinancialJuice; unverified). The UAE said 22 people were rescued after a fire on an oil tanker. West Texas Intermediate closed Friday at US$91.85.
The Strait of Hormuz carries a large share of the world's seaborne oil. Any incident there moves oil prices.
Oil prices feed straight into New Zealand petrol and diesel prices, with a lag of a few weeks.
Washington says the blockade is lawful enforcement against Iran.
Iran and its allies call it an act of war against shipping.
Whether the tanker incidents are linked to the blockade is still unknown. Treat the mine claim as unconfirmed until a second source reports it.
