Wall Street ends the week up; gold jumps 1.4%; NZX close unconfirmed

On Friday 9 October the S&P 500 closed at 7,811.54, up 0.59%; West Texas Intermediate settled at US$91.85, up 0.39%; and gold closed at US$4,216.3, up 1.43% (market data; Bloomberg reported strong earnings supporting US stocks). DailyDrop could not confirm the S&P/NZX 50 closing level for Friday: the previous edition used 13,749, up 0.4%, while an interest.co.nz intraday report pointed to a flat finish. The New Zealand dollar's Friday close is also not confirmed from two sources.

Oil and gold moves set the tone for New Zealand's open, and the Riyadh strike came after the US close.

Fuel prices and KiwiSaver balances follow these markets with a lag.

Expect oil to react to the weekend's Gulf news. The Riyadh strike happened after Friday's US close, so Monday's open will price it in.
