Greens vow to regulate artificial intelligence: “We don’t work for AI”
The Green Party announced an artificial-intelligence policy under the slogan “We don’t work for AI”, which includes regulating the technology to protect creativity and jobs (Stuff). A Green co-leader said “Nothing about this technology is inevitable” (RNZ). A separate RNZ piece asked whether AI’s “serious dangers and evils” can be regulated with a light touch.
AI regulation is a new campaign topic, and New Zealand has so far taken a lighter approach than some other countries.
If you work in a creative or office job, the policy is aimed at you. It is a proposal, and the Greens would need to be in government or influence it to deliver.
Supporters say rules are needed before jobs and creative work are hit.
Another view is that heavy regulation could deter investment and slow adoption.
