Hall and Woodford win the Nobel economics prize

Americans Robert E. Hall and Michael Woodford won the Nobel memorial prize in economic sciences on Monday 12 October, for work on stabilisation, Reuters reported. AP, Bloomberg and the Financial Times also reported the award.

The prize recognises research on how economies can be steadied through monetary and fiscal policy, the same tools central banks such as the Reserve Bank of New Zealand and finance ministers use.

Their field shapes the interest-rate and budget decisions that affect mortgages and prices, though a Nobel prize changes nothing directly this week.

A reminder, in a week when fiscal plans are being published, that how much to spend and when to steady the economy is an argument with a long academic history.
