Labour and ACT both promise cheaper school uniforms

Labour would require schools to limit the number of compulsory branded uniform items families must buy and allow “affordable, generic” options (1News, RNZ). Hipkins said getting kids ready for school “shouldn’t mean starting the term with another big bill” (RNZ). Stuff reported that Labour and ACT are united on the issue and that parties on both Left and Right now promise to crack down on costs.

School costs are a cross-party cost-of-living issue that costs little to promise and is easy for voters to understand.

If you have children at school, branded items such as blazers and jerseys can add up; the proposal would reduce what a school can require.

The case for: it eases pressure on families.

The case against: branded uniforms give schools a shared identity, and some schools have supplier arrangements.

A rare point where Left and Right agree. Check how each party would enforce it.
