Strategic diesel reserve agreement extended to August 2027
The Government extended its strategic diesel reserve agreement to August 2027, so 550,000 barrels of diesel will keep being stored at Marsden Point, RNZ reported; Inside Government NZ and Times.co.nz also carried the announcement. RNZ said Marsden Point has recently refurbished two large storage tanks to hold extra fuel.
A stored reserve is insurance against interruptions to fuel supply, which matters while ships are being attacked near the Strait of Hormuz.
The reserve guards against shortages. It is not a price cap, and the coverage checked says nothing about pump prices.
Cheap insurance, on the face of it. The figure to watch is how many days of use 550,000 barrels covers; the coverage did not say.
