New ministry MCERT, created in July, proposes cutting 400 roles in its first restructure

MCERT, a ministry created in July, met staff on Wednesday 14 October and proposed cutting 400 roles (RNZ, 1News, Stuff, NZ Herald). RNZ and 1News describe it as a new mega-ministry. The Herald reported that 365 of the 400 roles are vacant; that detail comes from one outlet. If it is right, about 35 filled positions are affected, which is DailyDrop’s arithmetic. The coverage checked does not give the ministry’s full name, which services are affected, or the timetable for a decision.

A restructure so soon after a ministry is formed shows how much the merger is expected to save, and how many posts were simply carried over from the bodies it replaced. Public service numbers are also a standing election argument.

If you use a service now run by the new ministry, the proposal does not change anything today. If you work in the public service, this is a consultation proposal, not a final decision.

The case for: cutting posts that no one is filling trims costs with little disruption.

The case against: vacancies often exist because staff are scarce, so deleting them can mean permanent gaps in the work.

Ask for two numbers before judging this: how many people would lose jobs, and what the 365 vacant posts were supposed to do. The headline figure on its own tells you little.
