Police watchdog: senior officer’s searches for female influencers were serious misconduct
The police watchdog found that a senior officer made sustained and repetitive searches involving a small number of female influencers and social media accounts, both on and off duty, in breach of police policy, and that this was serious misconduct (RNZ, 1News, Stuff). RNZ reported that the officer used a work device. Stuff reported that some of the material was later classified as pornographic, adult or mature. The coverage checked does not name the officer.
Police systems hold personal information about the public. Findings like this test whether officers’ access is audited and whether breaches have consequences.
If you are in public life or online, the case is a reminder that access to police databases is supposed to be limited to work purposes.
The finding is made. The open question is what follows for the officer, and whether police change who can see what.
