IEA says its oil stock release will exceed 400 million barrels

The International Energy Agency said its governing board agreed to complete the release of the outstanding 100 million barrels and that the total released under the March collective action will exceed 400 million barrels, with about 330 million released so far (Reuters, Bloomberg, FinancialJuice, 15 October). The board also said more than 20 million barrels of diesel would be released as soon as possible, and that members stand ready to act further.

Emergency stock releases are used to ease prices when supply is disrupted. Diesel is key for trucks, farms and freight.

New Zealand imports most of its refined fuel, so pump prices follow world prices and the exchange rate.

A release helps with timing, not with the underlying shortage. What to watch: oil prices and the IEA’s next statement.
