DOJ backs age checks for online platforms under the proposed Batang Ligtas bill
Justice Assistant Secretary Michelle Lapuz said the Batang Ligtas proposal would require platforms to set up age-assurance and age-verification systems, adopt "safety by design" and keep a Philippine-based legal representative who can respond to government requests, the Daily Tribune reported on October 8. The report said schools could also face accountability. It is only a proposal and needs congressional approval.
It would shift duties for children's safety onto tech companies, which privacy advocates may question.
Parents could see stricter age checks on apps if the bill passes.
Details such as penalties and privacy protections will decide whether it works.
