BIR tells impeachment court Sara Duterte and her husband declared ₱85.3 million in income, ₱13.3 million less than her net worth

Day 36 also heard that ₱96 million in joint deposits with her father sat in manager's checks left out of her SALN. Prosecutors say they will no longer present the bribery case.

A senior Bureau of Internal Revenue official testified on Thursday, October 8, that Vice President Sara Duterte and her husband, Manases Carpio, reported combined income of ₱85.34 million, net of tax, from 2007 to 2025, according to Philstar, the Manila Times and Inquirer. That is ₱13.31 million below the ₱98.66 million net worth she declared in her 2025 statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN). Lawyer Anne Loraine Garcia-Marquez, chief of staff of the BIR commissioner, also said the bureau has issued a letter of authority to audit one of the spouses.

Under cross-examination, the defense got her to say the income figures came from Davao offices and that she had no personal role in preparing the documents. One analysis noted that the BIR had submitted two different reports, which briefly confused the proceedings. The defense objected to showing tax returns on screen under the Data Privacy Act. The gap between income and net worth was not reconciled in court.

On the previous day, Day 35, testimony in the unexplained wealth part of the case showed more than ₱96 million in joint deposits with Rodrigo Duterte held in manager's checks and not declared in the SALN, Philstar reported. A BPI official also said the account documents did not carry Sara Duterte's signature, a point the defense stressed. The House prosecution said it will no longer present its bribery case. Duterte denies wrongdoing.

PSEi sheds 2.2 percent to 5,610.39 and peso closes at a record-low ₱62.90 as rate-hike fears grow

The PSEi dropped 126.30 points, or 2.2 percent, to 5,610.39 on Thursday, October 8, with every sector lower, the Daily Tribune reported. The Manila Times described a plunge as the peso neared ₱63. The peso closed at ₱62.90 per dollar, 15 centavos or 0.24 percent weaker than Wednesday and a new record-low close, past ₱62.86 on September 14, according to the Tribune, the Inquirer and BusinessWorld.

Analysts pointed to expectations of further interest rate hikes by the central bank, whose policy rate is 5 percent, and by the Federal Reserve after hawkish minutes of its September meeting. BusinessWorld cited contagion and oil supply fears. Philstar later described the index as at an 11-month low.

ICC finds Rodrigo Duterte fit to stand trial; proceedings still set to open on November 30

Trial Chamber III of the International Criminal Court found former president Rodrigo Duterte fit to stand trial, in a decision dated September 28 and made public on Thursday, October 8, according to the court's press release, Reuters via The Star, and VERA Files. Judges said an expert panel found some physical and mental slowing in line with his age and frailty, but that he understands the proceedings and can assist his defense. He is 81.

The chamber ordered adjustments, such as over-ear headphones or hearing aids, a break every hour and no hearings before 11 a.m., and rejected the defense's requests for another medical examination and an oral hearing. The trial on charges of murder and attempted murder as crimes against humanity linked to the anti-drug campaign is scheduled to begin on November 30. A fitness ruling is not a finding on guilt.

Sen. Mark Villar joins the Senate majority and takes the public works committee

Sen. Mark Villar left the minority and joined the Senate majority on Thursday, October 8, taking the Senate Committee on Public Works chair from Senate President Pro Tempore Vicente Sotto III and the Commission on Appointments seat held by Sen. Migz Zubiri, according to the Daily Tribune, Philstar and Gulf News. The motion was made by Majority Leader Zubiri and seconded by Sotto, and no senator objected.

Gulf News counted the majority at 14 and the minority at 10. The move came less than a month after the Ombudsman began a preliminary investigation into graft and administrative complaints involving members of the Villar family, Gulf News reported. Zubiri denied that the switch had anything to do with the impeachment trial, saying Villar wanted committee work so he could be more productive, and that joining the majority does not mean voting to convict (Tribune, Philstar). Commentary has linked the move to the vote count, since the court's September 23 ruling means 14 votes are now enough to convict. DailyDrop cannot say whether the Ombudsman probe and the switch are linked.

Palace says Marcos told agencies to prioritise food, fuel and electricity after inflation hit 7.2 percent

President Marcos directed agencies to focus on keeping supplies of food, fuel and electricity sufficient after September inflation rose to 7.2 percent, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said, according to OneNews and Philstar. Castro attributed the rise to the Middle East conflict and recent disasters, and said the instruction is that the country must not run out of fuel. Marcos met Executive Secretary Ralph Recto on easing price pressures.

The report listed tighter rice supply, higher transport costs and weather-related disruptions to fish and vegetable supply among the causes, and pointed to existing measures such as removing the 12 percent value-added tax from the system loss charge on electricity bills and the UPLIFT program for sectors hit by the war. DailyDrop has not seen new relief measures announced. In September Marcos said his administration could not guarantee a significant easing of prices this year, the Tribune reported.
