Francis Halzen wins the Nobel physics prize for IceCube and the discovery of cosmic neutrinos
Francis Halzen, a Belgian-American particle physicist, is the sole winner of the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics, for decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin (nobelprize.org, Free Press Journal, GDN, Daily Maverick, Devdiscourse). The prize is 12 million Swedish crowns and will be presented on 10 December.
Neutrinos reach us unaltered from distant, violent objects, so they open a new way of observing the universe.
