In the night of October 7 and throughout the day, Russia carried out a massive missile and drone strike on Kyiv and ten or so regions. A cruise missile hit a five-story building in Pryluky (Ukrainska Pravda, Censor.NET). According to the State Emergency Service, cited by AP, the death toll in Pryluky rose to 22, among them five children; 54 were wounded, seven of them children. Zelensky reported at least 25 dead and about 100 wounded across the country. In the evening drones struck Kyiv’s Obolon and Desnianskyi districts. Mourning has been declared in Pryluky for October 7–9.
This is one of the deadliest strikes on residential buildings this year. It came on the eve of winter and heightens the need for air defense capable of shooting down missiles over small towns.
Do not ignore alerts: a missile strike on a city with no military facilities is a reality in small towns too. Aid for the victims is best sent through verified charities and local authorities.
A massive strike on Putin’s birthday is a deliberately cynical symbol; the world should respond with additional sanctions and deliveries of air defense.
Moscow denies that it strikes civilians and calls such strikes a “response”; there is no independent evidence for this.
The final figures will still rise. For the reader only one line is useful: the official bulletins of the State Emergency Service and the regional military administrations. Separately, we are watching whether Patriot systems will be purchased and whether outage schedules change after the strike.
