Oil jumps as Iran steps up tanker attacks and Riyadh is hit again; WTI ends 3.6% higher

Oil jumped on 8 October after a tanker attack and slowing flows through the Strait of Hormuz (Financial Times, The New York Times, NBC News, The Guardian). NBC reported Brent at about US$105 with stocks tumbling as Trump considered renewed strikes on Iran (headline). Hormuz vessel traffic fell to a two-month low after tanker attacks (ET Infra headline). WTI closed at US$91.50, up 3.60%; the S&P 500 fell 0.47% to 7,765.36; gold rose 0.20% to US$4,157.0.

Oil is the main channel from Gulf tensions to everyday prices. A sharp jump with the strait under attack shows supply fears are not over.

Fuel feeds into transport, food and electricity costs in Kenya. The EPRA review on the 14th is the next test.

Producers and shippers say the market is reacting to real attacks and falling traffic.

Traders note prices swung from falls on Wednesday to a jump on Thursday, so a single day proves little.
