TurkStat announced that consumer prices rose 1.84 percent on the month and 29.73 percent on the year in September; the annual rate is below 30 percent for the first time since November 2021 (AA, DHA, Haber7, Memurlar.Net). Economists’ expected monthly range was 1.90-2.60 percent. Annual food inflation is 27.62 percent; on the month, food fell 0.2 percent. The biggest monthly increase was 14.19 percent in education, with 2.71 percent in housing and 2.79 percent in transport. D-PPI rose 2.07 percent on the month and 27.38 percent on the year. The October rent increase rate is 31.49 percent. ENAG calculated 2.10 percent monthly and 46.61 percent annually, and ITO 33.55 percent annually in Istanbul. Cevdet Yılmaz made a statement noting that the annual rate had fallen.
Inflation is the main yardstick for rents, wage raises, interest rate decisions and the Central Bank’s target. Falling below the 30 percent threshold is a symbolic turning point.
Your rent increase and indexed items such as civil servant or pension raises are set by these rates. But the inflation your everyday shopping feels like may differ depending on your basket.
The fall shows that tight monetary policy is working and disinflation continues; the monthly rise is below the expected range.
Sharp rises in items such as education and housing, the independent calculations and the still-high annual level feed the criticism that the official figure does not match what households experience.
The threshold matters but it is only half the road. The real question is whether the monthly rise can be held below 1.5 percent. In October the Central Bank’s language and the course of rent and education items will be decisive.
