Portugal come from behind to beat Norway and keep their 100% record in the Nations League, with no sign of Ronaldo

Jorge Jesus’s side won 2-1 on Sunday after trailing at 35 minutes. Cristiano Ronaldo, who left the national team’s training camp in Copenhagen, has promised to tell the truth “in due time”; the FPF regulations provide a suspension of one to six months for abandonment.

Portugal beat Norway 2-1 on Sunday, October 4, at the Estádio do Dragão in Porto, and keep their perfect record in the Nations League group, reaching 12 points and securing qualification for the next stage, according to reports by dgabc, A Crítica and Gazeta Esportiva. Norway took the lead in the 35th minute through Ajer. Two minutes later, Nuno Mendes took a throw-in into the box and Cancelo equalized first time. In the second half, Vitinha found João Félix, who headed the ball on for Gonçalo Ramos to make it 2-1 in the six-yard box. According to one report, Denmark beat Wales 1-0 and sit alone in second place in the group.

The match was played under the shadow of Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure from the training camp in Copenhagen, which the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) confirmed at the end of September without giving details (dnoticias). Reports speak of a “rupture” with the striker. Jorge Jesus again sidestepped the subject after the 4-2 win in Denmark (dnoticias). The FPF’s disciplinary regulations provide for an automatic preventive suspension for abandonment, according to a lawyer cited by the press, and then a penalty of one to six months; no sanction has been announced. DailyDrop has not yet seen the official match sheet from UEFA.

Flávio Bolsonaro finishes ahead of Lula in Brazil’s first round; runoff on October 25

Flávio Bolsonaro, of the PL, came first in the opening round of Brazil’s presidential election on Sunday, October 4, with 47.03% of valid votes, against 45.16% for Lula da Silva, in a TSE count cited by the Brazilian press. The gap is around 2.2 million votes. As neither passed 50%, the decision goes to a runoff, scheduled for October 25.

Earlier polls pointed to a technical tie, with Lula slightly ahead, and Bloomberg Línea writes that the result surprised both campaigns. Flávio declared that “the end of the PT era has been decreed.” Since 1989, no candidate who finished the first round in second place has turned it around. For Portugal, home to a large Brazilian community, the result matters because of Brazil’s political and economic weight.

Iran: the Strait of Hormuz stays closed until seven conditions are met

The speaker of Iran’s parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said on Sunday, October 4, that the Strait of Hormuz remains closed until the United States meets seven conditions, report Khaleej Times, Gulf News and Kurdistan24. According to the reports, they include an end to the naval blockade, the unfreezing of Iranian assets and an end to military pressure. The outlets describe the framing of the demands in different ways. Ghalibaf added that Iran will not accept unilateral demands from Washington and that proposals arrive through an intermediary.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said separately that Tehran’s plan could open the strait in seven days, if accepted (Gulf News). About a fifth of the world’s oil usually passes through the strait. For Portuguese drivers, expensive Brent weighs on fuel prices, even though prices also depend on the euro-dollar exchange rate. DailyDrop has not seen independent confirmation of ship traffic in the strait.

US economy created only 29,000 jobs in September and unemployment rose to 4.2%

The US Labor Department reported on Friday, October 2, that the economy added 29,000 non-farm jobs in September, against forecasts of around 84,000-90,000, and that the unemployment rate rose from 4.1% to 4.2% (Al Jazeera, UPI, SAN). August figures were revised down, from 162,000 to 133,000, and July went from a gain of 21,000 to a loss of 10,000. Health care was the sector that added the most jobs (17,000), while finance lost 7,000.

Wall Street closed Friday higher: the S&P 500 rose 0.73% to 7,722.72 points, WTI crude fell 1.90% to $91.11 a barrel and an ounce of gold fell 1.00% to $4,162.3. Markets are now betting more on the Fed holding rates, although sources differ on the scale of the shift in expectations (Al Jazeera). For those with loans or savings in euros, Fed policy weighs on the euro-dollar exchange rate.

OPEC+ keeps production limits unchanged for November

Seven OPEC+ countries (Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Algeria and Oman) decided on Sunday, October 4, at a virtual meeting, to leave the November limits unchanged, at a total of 31.01 million barrels a day, report Nairametrics, ARY News and QNA. It extends the October pause, after four monthly increases. Gulf producers are pumping less than the limits because of disruptions to exports linked to the war with Iran.

The next meeting is scheduled for November 1. For consumers, the decision matters less than what happens in the Strait of Hormuz and in the talks between Washington and Tehran: with no exports flowing, the limits are a secondary factor. DailyDrop has not seen independent estimates of the direct impact on fuel prices in Portugal.
