SPÖ bodies unanimously elect Holzleitner and Kucher as acting dual leadership

New since the previous days: the federal party executive has formally approved the agreement reached on Sunday. The duo leads the party immediately, Babler remains vice chancellor for now, and his future is open.

The SPÖ’s presidium and federal party executive voted unanimously on Thursday, October 8, to approve what the federal party leadership, the state party chairs, the federal women’s chair and the head of the trade unions had agreed on Sunday (ORF, SN, trend.at, oe24, Heute). Eva-Maria Holzleitner and Philip Kucher will run the party with immediate effect until a regular party congress. Holzleitner remains women’s minister and women’s chair, Kucher parliamentary group leader in the National Council.

According to an SPÖ statement, Andreas Babler remains vice chancellor for the time being, until Markus Marterbauer takes over as planned in early 2027. Marterbauer, who could not attend in person because of an EU finance ministers’ meeting, joined the executive by video link. In the party there is hope that, once he has fully recovered from his cancer, he will also take over the party chairmanship (ORF, Börse-Express). What becomes of Babler himself is open; nothing was decided. According to one report, a party congress is planned for the first quarter of 2027.

2026 Nobel Prize in Literature goes to Canadian poet Anne Carson

The Swedish Academy awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature on Thursday, October 8, to 76-year-old Canadian Anne Carson (20 Minuten, Börsenblatt, Bote der Urschweiz). She is honored for a bold and inventive body of work that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature. Carson is the 19th woman to receive the prize.

The decision was announced by Ingrid Carlberg, who has been the Academy’s Permanent Secretary since June 2026. According to the reports, Carson was reached by phone in Iceland. Last year the prize went to the Hungarian László Krasznahorkai. The award ceremony is planned for December 10 in Stockholm.

Oil price jumps on fears of new US strikes on Iran, Trump rules out attack before midterm elections

Oil prices rose sharply on Thursday, October 8: according to CNBC, Brent gained 4 percent to $104.28 a barrel and WTI 3.6 percent to about $91.5 (CNBC, finanzen.at, Euronews). The trigger was a report by The Atlantic magazine on possible new American strikes on Iran; NBC had earlier reported that Trump was considering new strikes in the coming weeks. CNBC also cites nine attacks on tankers in and around the Strait of Hormuz the previous week. Finanzen.at puts Brent at $102.80 during the day; the figures depend on the time of day.

Later Trump said, according to CNN, CNBC and XTB, that the US would not attack Iran before the midterm elections on November 3; “productive talks” were under way. The naval blockade of Iranian ports remains in force. Prices then eased somewhat, with Brent falling below $104. For Austria this matters mainly for fuel prices: the fuel price cap runs until November 30 and only partly dampens the rise.

Kosmo speaks of a noticeable drop in temperature; in the east, up to 23°C had still been possible beforehand. oe24 mentions snow in the mountains; severe hail is not expected, according to Kosmo. The exact warning situation changes during the day; the maps from GeoSphere Austria and the Unwetterzentrale are the binding reference.
