On Saturday, October 10, Ukraine reported heavy Russian attacks in the southeast, above all on Zaporizhzhia. Südtirol News initially cited at least twelve dead, a later dpa roundup on finanzen.net at least 20, including three minors according to the civil protection service. Zelensky spoke of five glide bombs on residential buildings and of attacks on 13 regions. He wrote on Telegram that Russia had apparently said “thank you” with this for the US easing of the diesel sanctions. This link is his account. At the same time, representatives of the US, Ukraine and Europe are holding consultations on ending the war.
The attacks show that diplomatic signals and the military situation do not move in step. Ukraine accuses the US of easing Russia’s finances with the diesel license.
Two things matter for Austria: the EU line on sanctions and energy prices. Concrete reactions from Vienna were not available to DailyDrop.
From the Ukrainian point of view, the easing rewards Moscow while civilians die.
From the US point of view, additional diesel volumes are meant to dampen prices and keep channels for talks open.
Casualty figures often rise in the hours after such attacks; the figure “at least 20” is an interim count. What matters is whether the EU answers the US license with a line of its own and whether the consultations on ending the war are affected.

Russian attacks on Zaporizhzhia: at least 20 dead, Zelensky links them to the US diesel licenses
New since yesterday: after the US diesel deal with Russia, Ukraine reports heavy attacks with glide bombs on residential buildings. The death toll rose over the course of the day.
In Russian attacks in southeastern Ukraine on Saturday, October 10, at least twelve people were initially killed according to Südtirol News, and at least 20 according to a later dpa roundup on finanzen.net, including, according to Ukraine’s civil protection service, three minors. Rescue work was continuing. President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke of five glide bombs on residential buildings in Zaporizhzhia and of attacks on 13 regions in all.
Zelensky wrote on Telegram that, with this attack, Moscow had apparently said “thank you” for the easing of the diesel sanctions. That is his account and has not been independently verified. The attacks coincided with new consultations among representatives of the US, Ukraine and Europe on ending the war. The US license for Russian diesel withdraws the sanctions temporarily until April 7, 2027 (reports from Friday); reactions from the EU or Austria were not available to DailyDrop.

In the night to Saturday, Trump criticized the choice of Navi Pillay on Truth Social: Norway bore an “indelible stain”, he had ended “eight wars” and was close to resolving two more, and “nobody” knew Pillay (Euronews, The Hill, Washington Post, Yahoo). According to the reports, the trigger was a joke by Pillay that she might perhaps share the prize with Trump. He had also spoken out at a rally in Syracuse (New York). The Norwegian head of government points out, according to the reports, that the government has no influence on the independent Nobel Committee.
The dispute shows how personally Trump takes the Nobel Peace Prize. It also brings to the fore the question of who counts as a peacemaker: lawyers who prosecute crimes, or politicians who broker ceasefires.
For Austria, as a host of international organizations, the role of international law is central. The dispute has no direct consequences.
Trump’s supporters see in the decision a snub to a politician who, they say, has ended conflicts.
Critics point out that the claim of eight ended wars is not independently substantiated and that the committee decides independently.
What matters is keeping the levels apart: the committee decides independently, Trump comments on his own channel. His figure of eight wars counts as his account, not as established fact.

Trump attacks Norway and Peace Prize laureate Pillay: “indelible stain”
Donald Trump sharply criticized the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to Navi Pillay in an overnight post on Truth Social (Euronews, The Hill, Washington Post, Yahoo). He called the decision an “indelible stain” on Norway, repeated that he had ended “eight wars” and was close to resolving two more, and said, according to Euronews, that “nobody” had ever heard of Pillay. These are his own claims; the reports do not substantiate them independently.
According to the reports, the trigger was a joke by Pillay after the announcement: that she might perhaps share the prize with Trump. The Norwegian prime minister has repeatedly stated that the government has no influence on the decision of the independent Nobel Committee.
