On October 5, Seguro calls for an end to the “culture of trenches” and for solutions with a “sense of urgency”

In his first speech as President of the Republic at the ceremony marking the establishment of the Republic, António José Seguro called for “a new political culture.” Chega, the PCP and Liberal Initiative criticized it; the PSD praised it.

The President of the Republic spoke yesterday, for the first time, at the October 5 ceremony in Praça do Município, next to the Paços do Concelho (City Hall), in Lisbon, after the mayor, Carlos Moedas, with the president of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, and Prime Minister Luís Montenegro present. Seguro called for a “new political culture” that leaves aside the “culture of trenches” and seeks solutions with a “sense of urgency,” and said that the Republic only fulfills its function when every person feels they have a place in it (RTP, Notícias ao Minuto). The week before, at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, he had warned of “attempts to roll back rights.”

Reactions were divided. Chega called the speech “more of the same,” for appealing for unity between the PSD and the PS and for “sending messages” to the party. The PCP, through João Ferreira, found it contradictory, because it appealed for understandings around policies and politicians who, in its reading, led to today’s problems. Liberal Initiative criticized the praise for the understanding between the Government and the PS on the Budget, and PSD MP Alexandre Poço found it “very positive.” DailyDrop has not read the full text of the speech and quotes only what the press has published.

Sánchez dissolves the Cortes and calls early general elections for November 29

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced yesterday the dissolution of the Cortes Generales and elections on November 29, after Congress on Friday rejected two Government decrees on housing; on one of them, Junts voted against (Jornal de Negócios, RTP). Sánchez informed the king and called an extraordinary Council of Ministers. The dissolution decree is expected to be published today so that, 54 days later, the election takes place on Sunday, November 29.

The legislature would have ended in 2027. The latest polls place the PP, led by Alberto Núñez Feijóo, ahead of the PSOE, without an absolute majority; Feijóo reacted by saying that “at last, the Spanish will decide.” For Portugal, Spain is the main trading partner, and political uncertainty in Madrid may shake investor confidence on the Iberian Peninsula. DailyDrop has not yet seen any poll taken after the announcement.

Medicine Nobel honors Deisseroth, Hegemann and Nagel for optogenetics

The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded yesterday to Karl Deisseroth, an American, and to Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel, Germans, for light-activated ion channels and optogenetics, according to the Karolinska Institute statement and the international press (Al Jazeera, Khaleej Times, SCMP). Hegemann and Nagel identified channelrhodopsin, a light-sensitive protein, in a single-celled alga; Deisseroth turned it into a light switch for nerve cells.

The method makes it possible to switch individual nerve cells on and off in a living brain, which helps in understanding how they play a part in memory, fear, addiction and movement. Reports allow for future applications in diseases such as Parkinson’s and epilepsy, but this is research, not an available treatment. Sources differ slightly on the laureates’ ages.

Parti Québécois wins Quebec election without a majority and promises new referendum

The pro-independence Parti Québécois won Monday’s provincial election, on October 5, but without a majority: it elected 59 members, while the Liberals got 40, the Conservatives 19 and Québec solidaire 9, according to counts cited by CP24 and the Canadian and international press. A majority required 64 of the 127 seats. Coalition Avenir Québec, which was governing, was left with no seats, and Premier Christine Fréchette lost her own seat, according to one analysis.

Paul St-Pierre Plamondon will form a minority government with less than 30% of the vote. The party promised a third referendum on sovereignty, but said it will wait until Donald Trump leaves the US presidency. Canada’s prime minister, Mark Carney, congratulated him. The numbers may still be adjusted when the final count is official.

US pulls bombers from Fairford in the UK; Iran denies drone plot

US European Command said that all American bombers deployed to the British base RAF Fairford are returning to the United States. Two American officials told Reuters the decision is due to an alleged Iranian plan for a drone attack on the base; the Wall Street Journal spoke of a “multifaceted” plan linked to the Revolutionary Guard. Five men were arrested on Sunday near the base and a sixth in London, a 22-year-old Briton, on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts.

Iran denies any involvement, and the Wall Street Journal writes that Trump downplayed the incident. The information about the plan and its origin consists of claims by anonymous sources and of ongoing investigations, with no public official confirmation. Reuters notes that the base is the US preferred base for its bombers in Europe. DailyDrop has not independently confirmed either the origin or the nature of the threat.
