On the evening of Oct. 12 a Russian Shahed drone hit a 25-floor building in Kyiv’s Darnytskyi district (Kyiv City Military Administration; NV, Ukrainska Pravda, RBC-Ukraine, Kyiv Post). Zelensky named two dead and nine wounded in Telegram; Rubryka wrote of 11 casualties. Kyiv Independent writes that drones hit the city both in the morning and in the evening: a woman was killed and 14 people were hurt. Later explosions rang out in Kyiv before the air-raid alert; NV and RBC-Ukraine call it a ballistic attack, Channel 24 counted at least six explosions, and Ukrainska Pravda reported a hit on transport infrastructure. That same evening the “Banderols” hit Kharkiv, and Roshen confirmed a hit on a production building in Vinnytsia.
Strikes on residential buildings and a late warning about ballistic missiles mean a direct risk to people. It is also a test of the “energy truce”: it does not cover such attacks.
If you are in Kyiv or Kharkiv, go to shelter as soon as the alert sounds, not after the first explosions. Check the official channels of the city administration for updated figures.
Russia keeps hitting civilian targets despite statements about a truce, so stronger pressure and sanctions are needed.
The final figures and circumstances — including why the alert came late — have not yet been officially confirmed.
We are watching three things: whether the numbers of dead and wounded are clarified, whether the delayed alert is explained, and whether strikes on cities stop within a day. So far none of these answers is confirmed.

A Shahed killed two people in a Kyiv high-rise; later ballistic missiles hit the capital before the air-raid alert
On the evening of Oct. 12 Kharkiv and Vinnytsia were also under attack. Zelensky says Ukraine did not strike Russian energy on the night of Oct. 12, while Russia struck Ukrainian energy.
On Monday evening, Oct. 12, a Russian Shahed drone hit a 25-floor residential building in Kyiv’s Darnytskyi district (Kyiv City Military Administration (KCMA); NV, Ukrainska Pravda, RBC-Ukraine, Kyiv Post). Zelensky reported in Telegram two dead and nine wounded; rescuers put out the fire. Rubryka wrote of 11 casualties, so the final figure may change. According to Kyiv Independent, Russian drones attacked Kyiv both in the morning and in the evening: a woman was killed and 14 people were hurt. Kyiv Post adds that during the day drone debris wounded at least four people in Kyiv, and in the Pecherskyi district debris from a downed drone started a fire; according to the same outlet, one person was killed in an attack in Dnipro, and 19 were wounded in Kharkiv, among them two children.
Later in the evening powerful explosions rang out in Kyiv, and the air-raid alert was announced only after them (NV, RBC-Ukraine, Ukrainska Pravda, Kyiv Independent). NV and RBC-Ukraine write that Russia struck with ballistic missiles. Channel 24 counted at least six explosions, and Ukrainska Pravda reported a hit on transport infrastructure. Kyiv Independent reported powerful explosions in the city center, and sirens and phone alerts, it says, went off only afterward. We have seen no confirmed data on dead or wounded from this strike. Why the warning came late has not been officially explained: there is no such explanation in the sources, so it remains an open question for the Air Force and the city authorities. An expert with the callsign “Flash,” cited by NV and RBC-Ukraine, believes that the US will not leave Ukraine without intelligence on ballistic missile launches.
That same evening three “Banderols” hit Kharkiv’s Kholodnohirskyi district: there are wounded, and in a multi-story building an entrance has been destroyed — according to RBC-Ukraine, people may be under the rubble (RBC-Ukraine, NV, Suspilne). Earlier Russia struck the Roshen factory in Vinnytsia; the company confirmed a hit on a production building (UNN, RBC-Ukraine). All this is happening against the backdrop of the “energy truce” that Trump announced on Sunday and the Kremlin has not confirmed.
Zelensky called it terror against civilians in Telegram: the Russians, he said, hit residential buildings and take lives. NV writes that the drone hit a residential complex where Dynamo Kyiv midfielder Oleksandr Pikhalyonok lives with his family; whether it is the same building is not specified in the sources. Separately, western Ukraine was attacked: in Rivne region, according to Suspilne, a non-residential building was damaged, and RBC-Ukraine reports that some schools in the region are switching to distance learning. In Lozova in Kharkiv region, according to Ukrainska Pravda, a woman was killed and seven people were wounded.
Kyiv is also preparing for infrastructure problems. Kyivvodokanal, according to RBC-Ukraine, says that the Bortnychi aeration station, the main wastewater treatment plant, cannot be stopped by two or three strikes because of its area and duplicated systems, and it has a plan for diverting sewage in case the collectors are damaged. The Kyiv City Military Administration explained how schools will operate during power and water outages (NV).
What this means. A strike on a residential building is not about energy, so even a functioning “energy truce” would not protect against such attacks. The alert is a separate issue: if ballistic missiles arrive before the signal, people have less time to reach shelter. The final casualty figures should be clarified by the Kyiv City Military Administration and rescuers, so it is worth waiting for updates. The practical advice is unchanged: go to shelter as soon as the alert sounds, without waiting for explosions.
