After call with Putin, Trump announces diesel supplies from Russia and temporarily eases sanctions

The US is allowing trade in Russian diesel until April 7, 2027, and Russia is to deliver over 300,000 tonnes immediately. Ukrainian President Zelensky sharply criticizes the move.

Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social on Friday, October 9, that after his phone call with Vladimir Putin, Russia would immediately make more than 300,000 tonnes of diesel available for the American and world markets; another 500,000 tonnes are to follow during November and then one million tonnes (Berliner Zeitung, web.de, taz). According to the reports, the US Treasury Department issued a temporary license permitting the sale, delivery, unloading and import of Russian diesel until April 7, 2027. According to web.de, what makes this explosive is that Trump had signed a law only the previous month that gives him powers for new Russia sanctions.

Zelensky criticized the move on Telegram, according to Berliner Zeitung: permission for Russia to sell petroleum products was an investment in the war; he spoke of “obvious weakness” and a deal with nothing in return for Ukraine. The taz also reports that Trump subsequently demanded Zelensky’s removal and that the German federal government is sticking to its sanctions decisions; both rest on that one report alone. DailyDrop had no statements from the EU or Austria. WTI closed on Friday up 0.39 percent at $91.85.

2026 Nobel Peace Prize goes to South African jurist Navanethem Pillay

The Nobel Committee in Oslo awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday, October 9, to South African jurist Navanethem “Navi” Pillay (Berliner Zeitung, watson, taz, Spektrum, Tages-Anzeiger). Committee chair Jørgen Watne Frydnes praised her efforts to promote peace and international law; she had contributed decisively to the criminal prosecution of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.

Pillay was born in Durban in 1941, grew up under apartheid and represented its victims. She later served as a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. She was chosen from 287 nominees (208 individuals, 79 organizations). The committee could not reach her at the announcement and publicly asked her to take Norwegian calls. The award ceremony is on December 10 in Oslo.

Stocker sticks with the three-party coalition and expects social assistance reform “this year”

Chancellor Christian Stocker is sticking with the coalition of ÖVP, SPÖ and NEOS despite the turbulence in the SPÖ and stresses that the government must remain able to work (VOL.AT, news.at, Nachrichten.at). On the planned social assistance reform, he expects a waiting period for people who have never paid into the system; it will succeed “this year,” he said, according to VOL.AT.

According to one report, the path is narrow: the law would have to be passed in the National Council in October for the reform to start on January 1, 2027, and according to this report there is no finished draft so far. News.at describes how the government is wrestling over the integration program and social assistance. Nachrichten.at reports on “autumn work” with a promise of results. When exactly the individual reports appeared varies; DailyDrop reflects the state of play, and no agreement has been reported.

Experts warn of AI-assisted cyberattacks, hospitals seen as especially critical

According to ORF Upper Austria, experts currently see the greater danger in targeted cyberattacks that are increasingly carried out with the help of AI. Attacks on hospitals and other parts of critical infrastructure could become especially critical (ORF OÖ, October 9).

In August, the Upper Austria Chamber of Labour reported a cyberattack on its systems; how much data was affected was initially unclear (AK Oberösterreich). Meinbezirk reports on a planned cyber agency meant to protect Austria from attacks; the date of that report is not confirmed. A concrete attack on hospitals in October could not be substantiated in the sources.
