Houthi missiles target Aramco's headquarters in Dhahran as Saudi-led forces strike oil depots near Sanaa and airlines cut Saudi flights

Saudi state news, as relayed by FinancialJuice, said an attack on an Aramco building caused a limited fire and no casualties. FinancialJuice put Tuesday's Brent settlement at $105.69 a barrel; Reuters said oil rose again in Asian trading on Wednesday.

Houthi missiles targeted Saudi Aramco's headquarters in Dhahran on Tuesday evening. Bloomberg reported that the headquarters was hit, Reuters that sources heard loud booms near the compound, and FinancialJuice that Iranian media said the headquarters was evacuated. Later FinancialJuice, citing Saudi state news and an energy ministry official, reported that an attack on an Aramco building caused a limited fire and no casualties. The Saudi-led coalition said it had intercepted a missile heading for Dhahran and another near Haradh. In Riyadh, FinancialJuice relayed Saudi civil defence saying four people were injured and 15 homes lightly damaged by debris from intercepted missiles. Reuters reported separately that Saudi warning systems had stayed silent before the deadly attacks on Riyadh's airport.

The coalition hit back at oil sites. It told civilians to leave an oil facility in Sanaa ahead of an operation (Reuters), and Bloomberg reported strikes on oil depots and a fuel depot near the Yemeni capital; the coalition said the Houthis used such sites to support missile and drone attacks (FinancialJuice). The Houthi-run health ministry said two people died in an attack on a Red Sea oil port, a claim from one outlet. Earlier on Tuesday the Houthis had warned civilians to stay away from Aramco facilities, calling them legitimate targets, and the Saudi cabinet, chaired by the Crown Prince, promised that the Houthis would face consequences (both FinancialJuice). President Trump said the Houthis were "behaving very badly" (FinancialJuice) and, per Reuters, were trying to push up oil prices before the US midterm elections; Middle East Eye quoted him tying them to Iran.

Airlines kept cutting Saudi routes. Qatar Airways said it was temporarily halting flights to and from Riyadh and Dammam, and Etihad cancelled Abu Dhabi–Riyadh services until 19 October (FinancialJuice); Antara, AD and Der Spiegel carried the suspensions. Shipping is exposed too: FinancialJuice relayed UKMTO reports of a tanker and a container ship struck in or near the Strait of Hormuz, and US Central Command saying US forces helped Gulf partners move more than 19 million barrels of crude through the strait on Monday, a figure from one outlet. Reuters reported that Saudi Arabia led a jump in OPEC+ output in September despite the disruption. FinancialJuice reported that Brent settled on Tuesday at $105.69 a barrel, down 96 cents, and US crude at $94.14, up 40 cents. Bloomberg said oil eased from a three-day gain, while Reuters said prices rose in Asian trading on Wednesday as traders weighed Saudi supply risk and Russian diesel flows. Kenya imports refined fuel, and the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority normally announces new maximum pump prices on the 14th, which is today. DailyDrop has not seen the announcement. If you are flying through the Gulf or to Saudi Arabia, ask your airline whether your route is running.

DR Congo's confirmed Ebola cases pass 9,000 as efforts to contain the outbreak falter

AP, ABC News, PBS NewsHour, Al Jazeera and Arab News reported on Tuesday that confirmed Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo have passed 9,000. AP, ABC, PBS and Al Jazeera said containment is faltering, and Arab News attributed the count to a government report. AP's Spanish service put deaths above 4,300, a figure DailyDrop has from one outlet. Global Times reported that a vaccine trial is close to launch, also from a single outlet. In the items we checked there was no strain, no list of affected provinces and no case outside DR Congo.

The outbreak runs alongside political turmoil. The BBC reported that former president Kabila was named leader of a new rebel coalition in DR Congo, and DW asked what his move towards the M23 group means for peace; DailyDrop has seen no report linking the two events. Kenya does not border DR Congo, but Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan and Burundi do, and Nairobi is a main air hub for the region. We saw no Kenyan government statement in the window, so the Ministry of Health's notices are the place to check before travelling to the affected area.

Vatican says Pope Leo XIV has lung cancer after surgery removed part of his right lung

After Tuesday's surgery the Vatican announced a lung cancer diagnosis for Pope Leo XIV, AP reported; the operation removed part of his right lung. NPR, NBC News, Le Monde, Expansión and Asharq Al-Awsat carried the same news; Le Monde said the nodule taken out was cancerous. The Times of India and Punch reported that the operation was successful, according to the Vatican. Reuters had reported earlier that the pope would enter hospital on Tuesday for surgery on a lung nodule.

US bishops and lawmakers offered prayers (OSV News, Detroit Catholic), and GMA and the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported that Cardinal Tagle will preside over Wednesday's Mass while the pope recovers. The news also puts his plans in question: Infobae reported that Argentina's government is keeping preparations for his visit while it waits for word from the Vatican, and La Repubblica said the Vatican must reconsider its agenda and trips. Folha de S.Paulo noted that the Vatican now issues detailed health bulletins where it once kept silent. DailyDrop has seen no statement on the type or stage of the cancer, or on a prognosis, and gives none. Kenya has a large Catholic community; we saw no statement from Kenyan church leaders in the window.

Parliamentary committee recommends a public debt register, the Nation reports

The Nation, a Kenyan newspaper, reported early on Tuesday, via the UA.NEWS aggregator, that a parliamentary committee recommends creating a public debt register. DailyDrop has only the headline. The committee's name, what the register would list and who would keep it are not in what we saw, and no second outlet carried the item in the window.

In general, a debt register is a single official list of what the state owes, to whom and on what terms, so that MPs and the public can check borrowing against what the Treasury reports. A committee recommendation is not law: it still needs the House to adopt it, and the committee's report, once tabled, is the document to read. The timing is notable because the IMF, meeting in Washington this week, named debt among the main risks to the world economy (Reuters). Treat this item as unconfirmed beyond the headline.

Formula 1 returns to Africa with a 10-year Rwanda Grand Prix deal, the first race on the continent since 1993

Reuters, Bloomberg, the BBC, Le Monde, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and CNA reported on Tuesday that Rwanda will host a Formula 1 race under a 10-year deal starting in the early 2030s, the first Grand Prix in Africa since 1993. L'Équipe noted that a circuit, an airport and a date are still to be found.

Amnesty International accused Formula 1 of offering Rwanda a "sportswashing prize" (CNA, Straits Times, L'Équipe), meaning the use of sport to improve a government's image. CNA and the Straits Times ran a preview of a fast, flowing circuit, but L'Équipe says the venue is not settled, so design details are provisional. El Mundo asked who is behind Rwanda's sports push, from Visit Rwanda to the cycling world championships and now Formula 1. Two Dutch sites quoted Max Verstappen calling a Grand Prix in Rwanda "great". For Kenya it is a regional story: an East African neighbour has won a global sports event, and the argument is about who pays and what the host gains. DailyDrop has not seen Rwanda's cost in the items.

Unverified — what we cannot confirm

"Ethiopian forces have crossed into Eritrea and taken a locality near Assab." Not confirmed: that is a forum post. Reuters reported only that Ethiopian troops entered a town on the border with Eritrea, stoking war fears (Reuters, Straits Times).
"Israel is pushing Trump to attack Iran before the US elections." Contested: Israel's N12 News said Netanyahu raised resuming the war with Trump and Axios reported they discussed a possible new Iran action, but Netanyahu's office denied he is pushing for an attack before the elections (FinancialJuice).
"Russia has stopped hitting Ukraine's energy sites." Overtaken by events: Reuters reported on Tuesday that Russia struck no energy targets for the first time since Trump's "truce", but that evening Zelenskyy said a Russian ballistic missile attack on Kyiv targeted the CHPP-4 heat and power plant, and Reuters reported two dead (Reuters, Bloomberg, FinancialJuice).
